I’m going to let you in on a little secret… I love people-watching. Watching other people go about their business, seeing how they interact, and wondering what they might be thinking-it’s fascinating; now don’t get me wrong I don’t do this in a creepy way, but everyone has a story and the avid bookworm in me is always curious to know what that might be.
The best place for people watching I find is airports. I have been fortunate enough to travel throughout the pandemic (within Government Guidelines of course) and the emotion of watching families, friends, and lovers being reunited after an indeterminable amount of time has often reduced me to tears.
You see the thing is, whilst we live in a world where we have never been more connected by technology thanks to our video calling apps, emails, and mobile phones, these tools that should facilitate closeness can leave some of us feeling more disconnected than ever. Add to the mix two years of social distancing, limited socialising face masks, and isolation periods social interaction feels like a chore; a skill that needs to be relearned.
Community is a basic need for the human species. The reality is we simply cannot thrive and develop without it; we learn from each other, there is safety in numbers and it is vital for our growth and survival. A sense of belonging has been scientifically proven to help us live longer, feel less stressed and be happier.
When we feel a genuine sense of connection to those around us we experience more joy, and more encouragement, we laugh harder and laugh louder. Doesn’t that sound like bliss?
